No IP Address in WLAN

Asked by Ian Langman

I have just installed 6.10. I have installed a DWLG510 (rev B) WLAN card. After initial installation I used the Synapticantec package installer to install "linux-resticted-modules-2.6.17-10-386 [I have a Compaq deskpro, Pentium II, 330 Mhz]. This allowed my WLAN card to be discovered am\nd I configured it to work to a WLAN router.

The WLAN card appearsconnected to the AP however it will not pick up an IP address, using DHCP. When I configured the IP address manually, I am unable to ping the gateway.

Here is the output from the iwconfig and ifconfig [DHCP enabled]

User@PC:~$ iwconfig

Questions.

I think something basic is wrong....I know very little about this....what have I missed?

What is the wifi0 interface?

I have also installed Network Manager and Network Manager-Gnome, however now that it is installed where do I find it to start it running. There is no icon apparent on the desk top.

Network manager starts always when you turn on yours ubuntu ( in default installation ). You should see a network manager icon in tray.

There is a great how to for network manager. Please check this website:

I now have Network Manager Icon [reinstalled the package], however as there is no network connection, the GUI does not appear....when you click on the icon, it says "No network connection".

So I am back to square one. The WLAN card is connecting to the AP, as I get the MAC address, Signal strength etc, however I can not get an IP address. I know that the access point works and provides an IP address as I am using a laptop on the same AP to send this. Why is there "no wireless extension" for wifi0?

Your iwconfig report no crypto used on ath0, attached to true_homewifi.

Do you use WPA or WEP with you AP ?

I am not using WPA or WEP.

I could access this AP without problems on the same computer with WIN98. I can access other WLAN APs with the UBUNTU installed, just not this particular one.

I uninstalled network manager...now all APs are responding correctly.
