Cannot connect to shares from Windows clients

Asked by wayne

Hello world !!!

Since today I cannot access the shares on my ubuntu server.
First it was one directory which had problems, after a few hours
I (and others in the network) were not able to connect to any of them.

One of the stacktraces I got :

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+filebug

I'm having this exact problem with every client I have running Ubuntu with Samba--worked fine yesterday but isn't working at all now this morning.

I noticed that an unattended update to Samba was loaded yesterday. Have you checked for this too?

/var/log/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades.log

It does not look like there has been an update.
/var/log/unattended-upgrades/unattended-upgrades.log does not exists,
just an empty unattended-upgrades-shutdown.log (Sept. 21. 2015)

When I look into /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/samba the directories have a timestamp of Apr 19 12:08.
That is about the time it all went down. All files are Apr 12 14:32.

What do you get when you run `smbclient -L localhost -UAdministrator` on the server, I get:

    session setup failed: NT_STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND

Could restart the samba service, or even the server.

Lookk more and more like memory or RAID problems.

+1. I am experiencing the exact same issue starting today. Reboots and service restarts have no effect.
$ smbclient -L localhost -Umyusername
WARNING: The "syslog" option is deprecated
Enter myusersname's password:
Connection to localhost failed (Error NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED)

I had this problem today after I installed samba-dbg to debug an issue. The whole thing just did not work and uninstalling samba-dbg did not fix the issue. What did fix the issue was running the following:

 $ apt-get install --reinstall libsmbclient libsmbclient-dev libtevent0 libtalloc2

I think there was a miss match of shared libraries with either tevent or talloc. After reinstalling all the libraries all was fixed.

Thank you Shane.

Did the reinstall and everything works again.

Does anyone know, how this came ?

I think I may have it. It seems that the new samba package poorly specified the dependencies it needed.

For example in the case of libtalloc2:

Here we see what the latest samba package specifies:
root@lsp:~# apt-cache show samba=2:4.3.8+dfsg-0ubuntu0.14.04.2 | grep Depends | cut -d',' -f21 | grep -vE '^$'
 libtalloc2 (>= 2.0.4~git20101213)

What the previous version requires:
root@lsp:~# apt-cache show samba=2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2 | grep Depends | cut -d',' -f30 | grep -vE '^$'
 libtalloc2 (>= 2.0.4~git20101213)

What actually gets installed by 2:4.1.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2:
libtalloc2=2.1.0-1

Version 2.1.0-1 would satisfy both packages dependencies.

What versions are available:
root@lsp:~# apt-cache show libtalloc2 | grep Version
Version: 2.1.5-0ubuntu0.14.04.1
Version: 2.1.0-1

Though, it seems that libtalloc2= 2.1.5-0ubuntu0.14.04.1 was not added until 2016-04-18 11:55.
root@lsp:~/bar# wget -q -O - http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/t/talloc/ | grep libtalloc2_2.1.5-0ubuntu0.14.04.1_amd64.deb | cut -d'>' -f10 | sed 's/ <.*$//'
2016-04-18 11:55

From this page(http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libtalloc2) it seems that libtalloc2 is a security upgrade, so my assumption is that the newest samba package should have specified the latest version of libtalloc2.

Someone please correct me if I am off-base.

Encountered the same problem and fixed by updating libtalloc2.
Is this tracked in any bug report?
