amd 64 boot problem
Ubuntu desktop 6.10 for AMD64 CD boot fails straight after selecting "Start or Install". System just hangs. My motherboard has all SATA drives (CD and HDD) and there is no IDE connector. Is this a problem?

Press F6 for further options and edit the line it boots with to remove "splash" and "quiet". It should give more information as it boots. What are the last few lines? What errors can you see?

Also there is a menu item to check the CD for errors, does this complete without errors?

removed "quiet" and "splash" as suggested then rebooted, stuff scrolls by pretty quick and then on the final page before hangs I have as follows:
Begin: Running /scripts/
[ 106.385.291] ACPI Exception (acpi_processor
Then more stuff which finishes with Done then
Begin: Mounting root file system ...
followed by more stuff which goes ok then the last 2 lines before it halts as follows:
[ 106.736917] ata1: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x9F0 ctl 0xBF2 bmdma 0xE000 irq 209
[ 106.736985] ata2: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x970 ctl 0xB72 bmdma 0xE008 irq 209

Hi Bob,
None of these messages really jumps out as an error unfortunately. I wouldn't expect the lack of an IDE connector to be an issue - I've installed on SATA-only AMD64 systems without an issue like this, however they all had IDE connectors, just nothing plugged into them.
The "Processor Device is not present" message sounds a little weird. You mentioned that you're using an AMD64 version of Ubuntu for installation. I assume the system you're installing on is an AMD64?

Hi Bryce and thanks.
Yes it's basically a Dell E521 with the Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor
4200+ to which I've added a 2nd HDD with a view to making it dual boot
Ubuntu/Windows. It's the 6.10 desktop distro I tried to install, haven't
tried the alternate yet. The mobo has pre-drilled holes for an IDE
connector, but no connector fitted.
Can you suggest anything else to try?
kind regards
Bob

Hello,
I tried to upgrade from 6.06 to 6.10 on AMD64 with SATA disk and after reboot I had exactly the same problem. Temporary I installed the older kernel from 6.06, which works without noticeable problems (except of nvidia driver of course). I think this problem is related to 64-bit version only.

Hi klem and thanks
I'll download 6.06 and try it, if it doesn't work I'll let you know,
otherwise I guess you've solved the problem for now.

Bob,
IMO you're better off with the x86 Ubuntu. Disadvantages of x64 include lack of Flash Player, multimedia codecs, some video drivers etc without much convolution, as well as random bugs as demonstrated here. x86 runs fine on my Athlon 64.
This may seem like stepping around the problem, but it's better for you long-term as well as fixing this.

I have an e521 as well. I had the same problem, but worked around it by pressing F6 as mentioned and appending noapic to the command line.
I had to switch from desktop to the alternate version to get the installer to work with my existing LVM partitions, and now I'm trying to figure out how to get an nvida X driver working; the vesa one is too slow.
This is my first try with ubuntu; I've been using Fedora Core mostly. I'm trying to find a distribution that plays well with Xen.

Kimlorentz could you please log a new support ticket rather than replying to an existing one. It makes it difficult to track your problem here. To report a new ticket please go to :-

Hi Jake
Due to problems installing on my AMD64 I built an i386 machine (I build
computers for a living) using a P4 3GHz processor and installed Edgy Eft
on that - and it works fine. I've left the AMD64 running Windows.
I do have another problem though... I can no longer fly real planes due
to my health, but I still like simulator flying. I downloaded the
FlightGear for i386 Debian package, but when I run the installer I get
the message "Error : Dependency is not satisfiable: libalut0"
As I'm new to Linux I haven't got a clue what this means.
regards
Bob

The OpenAL Utility Toolkit (the alut0 library) is missing from your system. This is needed to properly run FlightGear.
To install it, I believe the best way for you would be to use the Synaptic Package Manager (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager).
Search for libalut0 and once on it right click it and choose "Mark for Installation". Click "Apply" from the toolbar and you should be ready to roll.
Note that most probably you will have other unmet dependencies.
The installer will inform you as soon as they are found.
You will have to repeat this procedure for each of those.
Hope it helps.

AMD64 problems
I got the same sort of problem trying Ubuntu 7.04 on an ACER 5050-4697
Althoug I quit the ubuntu installation, I went on with Debian etch (which is in
the base of Ubuntu, I understand).
For the time being, just disable acpi, acpi=ht or acpi=off in boot line, and be prepared to
further problems in case you have to "power up" devices such as Wifi.
My log of the installation process (still fighting) is at
http://
I hope it helps
