Switching to Ubuntu

Hello!
I guess that this question has been asked often,but I really have to be sure...

I have three partitions,two on one hard disk and one on another.
Those are (on windows) C,D and F.
I am currently using Windows XP that is installed on C and I am wondering if I install ubuntu, would all files on all three partitions be deleted OR only files on C will be deleted (like when I reinstall Win XP)?

Well, any or all depending on what you want. If you plan to switch to Ubuntu and want to wipe out XP you can. If you want to keep XP you can. The letters C, D, and F will mean nothing to Ubuntu however. You will need to clearly understand which drive is which and which partition is which or you may end up overwriting the wrong one. Linux uses device names. They look like /dev/sda1 or /dev/hda1 or /dev/sda2 and so on. You will see drives referred to as HD0 or HD1 depending on what tool is looking at them. The best way to start is to boot the live CD and test things out - surf the web, listen to music, etc. If all seems well and you are ready to install, open a terminal (apps - accessories) and run this command

sudo fdisk -l

That last letter is a small L. This will output the names of your drives and partitions. Paste that info here and we can help you better understand what steps to take at install. See this page for a nice overview of the install process https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall.

My question is related butextends the situation.

I successfully installed Feisty Fawn from a live CD and have been setting up, etc. I installed as dual bootup to a WinME PC with 15Gb, 256mb, Celeron, 633mhz. All ia acceptable to me as a newbie re speed,etc.

Was notified of update to Ubuntu 7.10, downloaded and received message not enough space in Ubuntu partition.

My WinME is corrupted and serves no purpose so I assumed I could reinstall Feisty Fawn by using the live CD as per my initial install. My object is to use the entire HD option for Ubuntu and kill off WinME.

My BIOS is configured to boot from CD, ahead of HD. Tried several times, now need help, please, I assume I'll have to go thru some uninstall procedure, then reinstall again from my CD.
