can't write to re-recordable dvd's

Asked by Ian Brownlie

Whenever I try to write to a re-recordable dvd I get a message that says "unable to mount volume- invalid mount option. I have tried 'gnomebaker',' brassero', 'k3b'. All fail. My burner is a "Lite-On SOHW-1693S" it is a dual layer burner compatible with + or - DVD-RW. I've never had any problems with single use DVD's, so, anybody know what's the problem and how do I fix it. I'm hoping I haven't wasted my money on re-recordables.

Hi,

1. Open a terminal and install libdvdread3 and libdvdcss2:

sudo apt-get install libdvdread3 libdvdcss2

2. Shutdown the system:

sudo shutdown now

3. ...and switch it back on. Try to write to DVD.

Cheers,

Thanks for the quick reply, still no go I'm afraid. The terminal tells me that libdvdcss2 is not available, I installed libdvdread3 and re-started. The message I am getting is "cannot mount volume" Is there anything else I can try?

Did you do a system upgrade? I know that they just pushed a new update for the hal package, it fixed a few bugs it seems...

Hi, I have done every upgrade that has been available. The update manager tells me that my system is up to date. I'm getting frantic here, I really don't want to use my mates windows computer, I couldn't stand another 'told you so'.
     Thanks Richard.

More info, I just tried with 2 new re-recordable dvd's. They will write the first time, but that's it. If I try to record over the top it (k3b) tries to format the dvd and aborts half way through. Then it tells me it is unable to mount disc. I don't know if this is any help but there you are.

Even more info, I downloaded a trial version of nero for linux and it tells me to check permissions on the dvd burner, that nero can't access the drive. How the blazes do I do that. This is all getting too complicated.
