Can't dual boot windows 8.1 and ubuntu 15.04

Asked by nfamigletti

I have an hp Envy ultrabook with Windows 8.1 installed. I want to dual boot Ubuntu 15.04. I created a bootable USB drive with Universal USB installer from pendrivelinux., formatted as FAT32. I shrunk my Windows partition, so there is a free Basic partition of 20GB. I turned off fast boot, and disabled secure boot.

I can boot from my USB fine. On grub, I choose Install Ubuntu. All goes well until Ubuntu's Installation Type screen I am not offered any options to boot Windows and Ubuntu side by side. I do not get an option for "Something Else." I am just taken to an Installation Type screen where I should see my hard drive's /dev/sda, but the table is blank and the bottom bar says only /dev/sda, with nothing appearing after it.

It seems that Ubuntu cannot see my hard drive and its partitions.

I have also tried to change the boot order so that priority goes to the USB drive, but that did not help.

I also ran boot repair in Ubuntu, which did a repair, but no help.

In the Ubuntu terminal, my hard drive and its partitions is recognized.

Any ideas why my Installation Type table is blank?

Thank you for your help!

Hello,

please make sure you have completely shutdown Windows 8.1 , properly shutdown.

Newer versions of Windows have a feature where instead of shutdown cleanly, they hibernate. This prevents the Ubuntu installer from accessing the Disk partitions.

As an alternative, don't shutdown Windows but reboot(restart) instead and make sure that PC will boot from USB immediately after this.

Regards

P.S. Don't forget to mark the answer as [SOLVED], when done.

Thanks for you help Nick!

I addressed the hibernation issue by turning off hibernation from the Windows Command Prompt. I also disabled my Intel RST through the GUI, which I found when I typed Intel RST in Search. Once this was done, I rebooted from USB, and I did get the "Something Else" option and then I was able to see my hard drive in the Installation Type window. I finished partitioning my drive (which I had started in Windows Disk Management), and was able to install properly.

I'm still working on this, as Grub does not appear when I reboot. The computer goes directly to Windows. Still, I am able to get into my BIOS options and choose Ubuntu manually, so it works for now.

There seems to be a tremendous amount of variability in how to get dual boot to work, but it's a great learning experience.
