help updating an older version ( 8.04 hardy heron) of ubuntu error message reads "Could not download all repository indexes"

Asked by marisol rodriguez

Hi,
i am trying to update my old version of ubuntu 8.04 but have not been able to. i run synaptic package manager to upgrade it & receive this error message.

could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/talkplugin/deb/dists/stable/Release Unable to find expected entry main/binary-lpia/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Failed to fetch http://linux.dropbox.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/Release Unable to find expected entry main/binary-lpia/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead

Please help! any info would be greatly appreciated !
Thanks!
p.s. im not very computer savvy some hand-held guidance will probably be needed! lol please bear with the newbie! :)
Mari

Please read this:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS is end-of-life and not supported anymore.

I suggest performing a clean install of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, which is supported until April 2019.

14.04 will also allow you to upgrade directly to 16.04 in April next year

Download and MD5 test the ISO you download
Use a CD burner to burn the image to a CD, or unetbooting (or similar) to put the ISO on a USB stick.
Boot to the install media and run through the install, selecting to use the entire disk for Ubuntu (I assume you do not dual boot).

This willdestroy ALL data, so be sure you have backed up the data you need.
