Administrative directory is locked

Asked by Justin

I am running 12.04 on a thinkpad x230 convertable laptop/tablet. and I am a noob so be gentle!

Here is what terminal is returning when trying to run update.

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
amy@Equinetablet:~$ sudo lsof /var/lib/dpkg/lock
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/jenn/.gvfs
      Output information may be incomplete.
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/amy/.gvfs
      Output information may be incomplete.
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
dpkg 20866 root 3uW REG 8,1 0 12452452 /var/lib/dpkg/lock
amy@Equinetablet:~$

I've tried killing the pid and even killing dpkg but I am still locked. I am very confident that this is related to the fact that Dropbox stalled out during install. What should I do next?
