1st boot failed, 2nd passed; hda_codec: invalid dep_range_val 0:7fff

Asked by Wolf Canis

Hello,
if I boot the first time, this boot failed with a command screen something from dbus and fsck. But it switched to some other screens and I'm not able to write this messages down.
The second or third try to boot succeeded.
In /var/log/messages appears following entry many times:

[17179596.276000] hda_codec: invalid dep_range_val 0:7fff

This behaviour happens only the first time a day. A reboot for example succeeded at once, if not I boot in recovery mode and then a "shutdown -r now". If that doesn't work too, than I boot in recovery mode again and switch in runlevel 2 with "init 2".

My System:
Laptop Toshiba Satellite L30-140 Modell Nr. PSL 33E - 00G00NGR
ubuntu 6.10

Patition table:

sda1 ntfs /dev/sda1 (Windows XP Home Edition; I can't delete it, because I would
lose my warranty. That is the first time since 10 years, I must
                                                            use this MS-Bug, however.)
sda2 swap
sda3 reiserfs /

I have the original entry in the fstab changed to read only and no check at boot:

# /dev/sda1
#UUID=BAC44BD6C44B9413 /media/sda1 ntfs defaults,nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0 1
UUID=BAC44BD6C44B9413 /media/sda1 ntfs ro,nls=utf8,umask=0222,gid=46 0 0

The disabled entry is the original from the installer.

/var/log/boot is always the following entry:

Apr 12 06:31:58 rcS: * Files under mount point '/var/run' will be hidden.

I have the idea that this all happens, because the shutdown procedure doesn't complete. I mean that something during the shutdown procedure went wrong and the procedure can't fix it. The laptop always switched off.

I hope that this informations are useful.

Thankx in advance,
                              Mr Canis

Hello,
I tried some boot parameters, with no resolution, but some experiences:
- nosmp -> Kernel crashed horrible, not once the sysq-keys are working
- noacpi -> the same as nosmp
- pci=nobios -> Kernel booted without problems, but the hda_intel messages
- debug, loglevel=7, apic=debug, acpi_dbg_level=1 -> I couldn't see any differences

Some extensions to the mount/fsck screen at first boot a day. Below the fragments that
I could remember:

readlink: /proc/1814/exe: No such file or directory
[:/bin/udevd: unknown operand
kill: Could not kill pid `1814': No such process

Then I installed the source code and examined them. That's the result:

The warning message is defined in the source file ./source/pci/hda/hda_codec.c line 212
in function snd_get_connection(...).
Before this warning happened there is a message like azx_get_response timed out
switching to single command. That is defined in source file hda_intel.c line 524 in func-
tion azx_rirb_get_response(...). azx_get_response trigger the function above.
Code in short:
  if single_cmd
     return azx_single_get_response
  else
    return azx_rirb_get_response

The warning comes from the function in the else branch. The hda_intel doesn't
recognized single command but then if it test for multiple command it failed and fall
back to single command.

I don't know what's on that right or wrong but that's what happens. The problem on
that is, that I'm not able to get the boot messages before syslogd starts up. Nothing in
the logfiles and only a few in in dmesg output.
I think if I can get all messages after boot then once can see what are going wrong.
http://www.intel.com/products/processor/celeron_m/ describes the cpu and the chipsets
in this laptop.

No one there, who can help? Or have any idea?

Thanks in advance,
                                   Mr Canis

Hello Mr Canis,

Such long log output are not needed and makes reading this ticket a lot harder. From what you posted, boot log messages are fully here, so no problem on this side.

About the hda_codec error. Kernel error messages usually shows up when the hardware is not fully recognized by the kernel, when the kernel is buggy with this hardware, or when the hardware is faulty. The hda_codec is related to the sound card. Which sound card do you use? Can you post the output of 'lspci -vv'?

Regarding the fsck problem you mention, I don't understand clearly what it's about, can you explain this again?

Hello Antoine Delvaux,
first, you are completely right with the long output. No excuses, but a explanation: That happens, if the finger are faster as the mind. ~;(

fsck issue:
Have you read my post from the 2007-01-03. I'm afraid, I can't say any more. Only that it doesn't happened at every boot, only sometimes. I think that it could be, that it have something to do with the first message in /var/log/boot:

Mar 20 05:44:23 rcS: * Files under mount point '/var/run' will be hidden.

That could mean, that after shutdown there are still entries in /var/run, but they shouldn't and if the system boot up the boot procedure confused with this entries. Only a thought. Then I can't reproduce it and because of the missing boot messages I have not really a opportunity to dig deeper. Anyhow this is the point at them I stuck.

Thanks in advance,
                              Mr Canis

Hello,
I still have this problem, but with the kernel 2.6.17.11 not so often as
with the kernel 2.6.17.10.
This behaviour I have on two Toshiba laptops (Tecra 8100, Tecra
Satellite L30-140). And always no entries in any log. The only
difference is, that on the Satellite in /var/log/boot the first entry
is always:

Apr 21 16:28:00 rcS: * Files under mount point '/var/run'
will be hidden.

Mr Canis,

The message about hidden files under /var/run means your system mounts a partition at this mount point, but this directory already contains files, probably on the / mount point. So the new partition will hide these existing files. Maybe you should have a look by unmounting the /var/run partition and if those files are not needed, or already present in the unmounted parition, clean this whole directory. These files are probably coming from a previous install or a bootup with the /var/run parition unmounted or something.

However, I guess it has nothing to do with the problem of your audio device.

Can you also tell me which kernel module your audio card is using? An output of 'lsmod' should be ok.

Thanks.

Hello Antoine Delvaux,
the problem with /var/run is solved. I booted with the
live CD and mounted my root filesystem at /mnt and deleted
the hole content in /var/run. The content was dated from
2006.
But you are right that have nothing to do with the hda_codec
messages. Above the output from lsmod.

Perfect !

I see you use the snd_hda_intel module for you audio device, which is fine. This module can work with various different sound cards and chipset. The default behaviour is to auto detect the chipset, which in most case is ok However, sometimes this doesn't work right. Maybe you should give this module a specific parameter and see how it behaves.

You can find more information about this issue at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto ans the various steps you can use to try to solve the problems. Upgrading to feisty could also be an option as a new kernel is provided.

Let us know the issue.

Antoine.

Hello Antoine Delvaux,
sorry for the delay, but I haven't become your post via e-mail from launchpad as usually.

I did so as you suggested. The result is that the system doesn't boot any more. I can only boot with the old kernel 2.6.17-10. If I boot with the latest edgy kernel 2.6.17-11 the kernel crashed. A reboot is only with the magic keys possible. I tried various parameter too, but without any positive result.

Is there a way to bring the system in a state that the system will boot with the kernel 2.6.17-11 as before this changes?
Because, I think for a upgrade to feisty it should running the kernel 2.6.17-11.

Thanks in advance,

Hello,
I forgot to wrote what I did.

-- begin --
cd alsa-driver-1.0.14rc1
sudo ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel
sudo make
sudo make install

cd ../alsa-lib-1.0.14rc1
sudo ./configure
sudo make
sudo make install

cd ../alsa-utils-1.0.14rc1
sudo ./configure
sudo make
sudo make install

Reboot
-- end --

The result I described in my last post.
After boot with the kernel 2.6.17-10, I burned Feisty Fawn on a CD and did a reboot with that CD. The system boots, but no sound at all. The drivers are loaded properly. Therefore I think a upgrade isn't a solution for this problem.

Subject: Restore the system to the original state
Could it work, if I reinstall the kernel image 2.6.17-11-generic and the ALSA packages (base, lib, utils)?

Thanks in advance,

Hello,
I tried the same procedure as described at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto but with ALSA version 1.0.13. Which is for now the stable release, according to the ALSA home page. But it didn't worked, too.

I think at this stage I need a procedure to bring back the system in the original edgy state. Therefore my question ones more:

Could it work, if I reinstall the kernel image 2.6.17-11-generic and the ALSA packages (base, lib, utils)?

Thanks in advance,

Hello Mr Canis,

Sorry for the trouble caused by the compilations and various update.
But you have restored your system to a working state, that's fine.

Regarding the sound problem, instead recompiling the whole alsa package
you should first try to give a special parameter to the snd-hda-intel
module. This is what is explained in the last part of
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto 'Manually specify
which flavor you are using'.

This can be done by editing the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base configuration
file and giving a different 'model=' option. Some options you can try
are given on the page as well.

To try this you don't need to recompile anything, just try setting this
option right away in the alsa-base configuration file. To try different
settings, you have to unload the module first. Maybe this can be done
with a 'modprobe -r snd-hda-intel' and then a 'modprobe snd-hda-intel'
just afterward. If it doesn't work, a reboot is necessary. having a
look at /var/log/syslog after doing the modprobe can show some
interesting output.

Hope this helps,

Antoine.

I tried that but without success.

Know I've installed feisty but still the same problem, a little bit
different.
Therefore I leave this ticket closed and open a know one but before I
