My computer keeps losing my primary external 3 TB hard rive

I am using V 14 latest LTS. Almost without fail when I switch-off or change OS I lose my primary external backup HD. It is a 3 TB Seagate. I have to either power it off and on or disconnect the USB 3 connector. Is this the OS or computer? Any solutions?

Version is 14.10

14.10 isn't LTS and is only supported til July this year.

You may want to upgrade to Vivid.

What filesystem is the USB partition using?
If you are using a USB3 port, try USB2.

I have not turned off or changed OS since the answer, but will certainly confirm whether or not it works
