Hi,
Please answer the following questions so that we can assist your better.
How did you install the virus scanner?
If you know the name of it, can you run it from the terminal? (You could try aegis-virus-scanner or clamav.)
As far as I know, there is no Ubuntu error message that says "Your internet connection has been lost." What gave you this error message? Firefox? The wireless tool?
Thanks.

In all honesty, I doubt you got a virus. First off, the chances of getting a virus on Linux is very slim. If you do indeed get a virus, it shouldn't do anything unless you run it. Even then, you would have to type in your password before it could cause any real harm. Otherwise, it would be running sandboxed and it can only harm things that your user has permission to do. It could tamper with your home directory, but not the system files which would be causing network issues.

Judging from how you described the incident, I don't think that you ran the file, so you shouldn't worry.

As for your network connection loss, there could be many reasons why you are having issues. It could be poor signal quality, the card is misconfigured, or that it isn't even your problem and maybe the site or server is down.

Firstr, I did not install the virus scanner, it was
installed when I installed ubuntu.

I assume it is the aegis virus scanner, but I don't
really know as the few places where it is listed, it
is listed only as 'virus scanner'

The 'lost connection' message may have been worded
differently, I didn't write it down. But it was
something along the lines of "your connection on ath0
has been lost" or something like that. As to what
program generated the error message, I don't know as I
had both bittorrent and firefox running at the time,
and the message didn't specify what program called it.

If I knew where to find the virus scanner, I'd try
running it, but I have to know what folder it is
installed in, and searching for it does not find
anything.

Well, I wasn't really that concerned with the virus,
except that I had the connection problem.

As to the server being down, as I mentioned, I oppened
the wireless assistant tool and it showed TWO
instances of my wireless card, which is not right. But
both instances showed a decent signal. And as I also
mentioned, as soon as I rebooted, the connection
worked fine again.

If only the torrent had stopped, or only firefox, I
might assume it was that specific server, but both
seemed to loose all connection at the same time, and
then the wireless assistant did the weird thing
showing TWO wireless cards (or two signals or
whatever. I KNOW I only have one wireless card, and I
also know for a fact that there is only one signal I
can receive.)

I would not worry so much except, as I mentioned,
although I can't site specific examples, I'm fairly
certain other installed programs are not showing up in
the menu.

Also, I tried to run the virus scanner from the 'run
program' dialog box, but not knowing the correct name,
I had to try the 'browse for program' option in the
dialog box, and the browse tool there also did not
show any virus scanner.

Are you looking at the Add/Remove window? If so, the unchecked ones are the ones you haven't installed yet. Are there always two cards in that window? If so, it could just be a bug. It might not even be the problem. I thought you mentioned that BitTorrent was working but the rest of the internet wasn't. If this isn't the case, then you probably have a bad signal. What does it say for the signal quality? Try moving closer to the wireless device.

I am not sure what you are asking me. when I say there
were two wireless devices, I was looking at the
"wireless assistant" application, and it read a decent
signal quality, but it also read two devices when
there should only be one.

I cannot move closer to the source, unless I want to
move my home, or use my computer in the yard.

Tell ya what, mark this question as solved, its
obvious there isn;t a cure, since we aren't even
dealing with the question I originally wanted help
with, which was why certain programs are not showing
up on the menu.

The wireless connection thing MAY have just been a bad
signal for a moment, or a simple passing glitch in the
system (stray cosmic ray or some such) or the whole
thing could be my old, out of date computer.

I guess I don't need virus scan, even though the
add/remove app shows that I HAVE it. And I suppose,
since any other apps that might be missing are unknown
for the simple fact that they are missing, I guess
I'll never miss them anyway.

Just do whatever you have to do to mark this problem
as solved, because I am tired of dealing with it.

Whilst being as diplomatic as I can be, this flat isn't true. Ubuntu does NOT ship with a virus scanner by default, full stop. You may have installed aegis-virus-scanner either using the Synaptic Package manager, or using external 3rd party tools such as Automatix or EasyUbuntu, but it didn't come from Ubuntu direct, I can assure you of that.

That aside, if you *did* install aegis virus scanner then you can run it by pressing ALT+F2 and in the "Run Application" dialog box type "aegis-virus-scanner" (without the quotes) and click "Run". It will pop up the scanner which will allow you to scan various directories. I just tried this and it works quite well.

You may also want to click the About button and then "update virus definitions" because the shipped version is out of date now.

> I assume it is the aegis virus scanner, but I don't really know as the few places where it is listed, it is listed only as 'virus scanner'

Yes, it's odd that it doesn't appear on the menu. If you would like to create a shortcut in the panel you can do that by right clicking and choosing Add. Now you know the name of the program is "aegis-virus-scanner" you can add that as the program to launch. It's not ideal, but at least then you will have easy access to it.

Of course as others have pointed out, you're highly unlikely to get Viruses on Ubuntu or indeed any other Linux distribution. Personally I don't run an antivirus package, but that's just me :)

I have responded to your network related questions in your other support ticket. It's probably best to keep the two subjects separate as they're not related.

In regards to the issue of the missing virus scan
program, using the ALT+F2 combination and entering
aegis-virus-scanner in the run dialog box, it worked
fine.

In fat, I only had to type ae and ubuntu finished the
title for me.

I would also like to apologize if my other message
sounded a bit rude. I was very tired when I wrote it,
and under some stress due to other issues in my life,
and the problems I was having reminded me a little too
much of the problems I had had in the past with
Mandrake. I do not say this expecting to be excused,
but merely as an explanation. Once again, sorry if it
seemed rude.

I also do not have Aegis virus scan showing in my Applications/Accessories menu. I added Aegis by way of Add/Remove in the applications menu. When it finished it stated that it would be in the Applications/Accessories menu - but its not. I know that I can run it by Alt F2 but there seems to be another bug besides not being in the menu - after updating it says "last updated 288 days ago". That is not good for a virus scan program.

Yes, I had a similar issue, it always wanted to
update, even as soon as it finished updating.

It also reported always finding magister-a virus on my
windows drives, an NO virus software I could find for
windows EVER detected this virus...

I use Nortons Antivirus in windows and keep it up to
date, and it never found any magister virus. I even
downloaded other virus software, ones that were stated
to be specifically designed to detect and remove the
magister virus, and they never found it either. Yet
Aegis continues to say I have magister virus on my
windows drives...

for the most part, I have stopped worrying about it,
since Linux is basically immune to viruses, and if
windows really had magister, it would have wiped my
hard drive within a couple months, as this is the
behaviour I read was caused by magister. Nothing has
wiped any of my drives, so I doubt very much I have
magister...
