Asked by Mike Hinchman

64 bit system, NVIDIA graphics, has worked well before now. Hangs on blank screen trying to load UI. What can I do to get my system working?

Did you upgrade within 14.04 or did you change release?

Thanks.

First I upgraded within 14.04. Then I tried apt-get dist-upgrade from
command line. Neither worked. Any way to fix this?

I have the same issue.

I'm running Ubuntu Gnome 14.04.01 LTS . I did the update yesterday and today i can't start my box. After Grub the splash screen hangs and nothing happen.

With ESC i checked what its going on saw, that it coult not start GNOME Display Manager [fail].

I already tried to reinstall my computer. After installing everything is fine, but after the update and reboot: again the same error occurs.

I'm have a Nvidia graphic card, i didn't change anything between setup and update. So it's using nouveau drivers by default as far as i know.

I have been fighting with Ubuntu problems with NVIDIA graphics for
years. Suspected what you have said, that the problem would come back if
I reinstalled and then updated. Too much effort for nothing.

I bought an ATI Radeon graphics card and will get away from NVIDIA when
the card arrives. My wife's PC runs ATI Radeon and it is as stable as a
rock. Fortunately I was able to use Puppy Linux to copy my 6 GB of files
and profiles to a flash memory, so I have my files, Firefox bookmarks,
and Thunderbird addresses. I transferred what I needed to the Dell
laptop, also running 14.04, and seem to be in business. I hate NVIDIA
and will not use it again.

I like Ubuntu and have been using and recommending it since 6.10, so I
am no newbie. Thanks for the message.

Uninstall the nvidia driver then reinstall it. It is rare for proprietary drivers to survive release changes.
