How Do I update Opera 9.25 to 9.26?

Asked by taurus

Hey guys!!! I currently have Opera 9.25 installed and I found out that 9.26 is now available. I downloaded the tar.gz to my desktop. I'm a newbie at this, so how should I install this with all my previous settings in place from 9.25? Thanks!

Why have you downloaded tar.gz - this is source code and you have to copile it and it's not so easy... Just download deb package (here you will find it - http://www.opera.com/download/ - just select your version of Ubuntu and download) and then install it easy (just doubleclick will open gdebi installer..).

Vojtech, thanks for the reply. Do you think that the Deb package will keep all of my settings that were in place in Opera 9.25? I don't want to lose any of my settings if I update to Opera 9.26. Thanks.

Back up your .opera directory in your home directory to make sure the settings are retained.

OK, I got Ubuntu 7.10 installed. You said that I should get the latest Opera through my distro package manager. I first got my current Opera 9.25 through apt-get install. Now, I'm a newbie, so what what command line do you recommend I use to get the updated version of Opera, which is 9.26? Thanks.

Only download the DEB package and install it manually...

Vojtech, take a look at these instructions please and let me know what you think. Is this the better way of updating Opera?....

edit your sources.list...

nano /etc/apt/sources.list

and add this...

# opera
deb http://deb.opera.com/opera/ stable non-free

then just apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade and you should have opera 9.26

Yes, you are right. This is the best way because you will no longer take care about updating opera - it will update via Update manager...

Vojtech, I don't understand something here... when I enter: "nano /etc/apt/sources.list" to edit my sources.list, two tabs come up in terminal: Nano and Sources.

Do I add "# opera deb http://deb.opera.com/opera/ stable non-free" under Nano or under Sources?

Thanks !

Nano is terminal based text editor and it is not easy to use it if you don't know how...

The best way is to do it in GUI -- System→Administration→Software Sources→Third-Party Software→Add→in the line copy "deb http://deb.opera.com/opera/ stable non-free" (without quotation marks).

Vojtech, I did what you recommended and I got the following error:

W: GPG error: http://deb.opera.com stable Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 033431536A423791

What should I do now? Thanks.

Vojtech, never mind.... Somehow, even though I got that error, I was later presented with an update for Opera 9.26. Weird that I had received that error, but at last I got the update thanks to you. Thanks a million! Now, I know what to do when there's an Opera update. Take care!
