VPN Setup issues

Asked by morinku

Hello,

I have played around (newbee)with a coupe of distros and finally decided on Ubuntu. I just blew away Windows XP on my notebook and installed Ubuntu 7.10. I am trying to setup VPN to connect to work. I could not find VPN on the initial install so I installed VPNC. After install I noticed if I right clicked on the config network icon in the taskbar I seen VPN Configuration. I configured the VPN connection for my work place and saved. Now when I right click on the taskbar icon I select VPN Configuration and only see Add VPN and Disconnect VPN. I do not see a way to connect to the VPN I created. Obviously I am missing something and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

if you are running Ubuntu it might be of interest for you installing one of the following packages:

network-manager-openvpn - network management framework (OpenVPN plugin)
network-manager-pptp - network management framework (PPTP plugin)
network-manager-vpnc - network management framework (VPNC plugin)

The integrate directly into you already enabled network manager and are quite easy to setup.

I did install the VPNC plugin. I did use this to configure my VPN connection into work. The problem is after I configured the VPN setup and saved I cannot figure out how to connect to the VPN that I created. There is a network icon in the upper right taskbar. If I open it I can select VPN Configuration. In VPN Configuration there is an Add VPN which I used to configure my connection and there is a Disconnect VPN (which is greyed out). I would expect to see a Connect VPN in that menu which I do not see. I would have believed that would have beed added when I installed the VPNC plugin. I have no problems getting to the internet. I just cannot find a way to connect to the VPN connection I created. Hope this wa s clear.

Thanks

I got VPN finally working under Ubuntu 7.10. I ended up removing the VPN client ( VPN Connection Manager (PPP generic) ), reboot and re-installed the client. I now was able to add a connection ( Work VPN), configure it, and when I was through I now had a Work VPN in the VPN Connections. After I made it over this hurdle I was having trouble connecting to work even though all the VPN settings ( configuration ) looked good. I would click on Work VPN, an authentication box would come up, I would enter my username, password, and OK and nothing would happen. I checked the log and found " no currently active network device, won't activate VPN." section in the log. Upon doing a Google search using "no currently active network device, won't activate VPN." I found a person got his VPN running by selecting ' by enabling roaming in the network setup which I did not have set. I am using DHCP to get an address. I hope this helps.
