It's your own password it's asking for. So use the password you used to logon to the desktop.

During the install it asked you to make a user name and password by default ubuntu uses the user password you made for "root" access. its used anytime a password is asked for.

Thanks guys for getting back to me but I still can't get in.

Here's what I'm doing:

I click Applications then I click Add Applications.
I then get the following:
"Please enter your password to run /usr/bib/gnome-app-install"

After I put in what I /think /is my password I get the following:
"Failed to run/usr/bin/gnome-app-install as user root: Wrong password"

I suppose it's possible I'm mis-remembering the password I put in.
If so, how do I retrieve or change it?
Do I need to completely uninstall and start over?

Thanks in advance for any additional help you can give me.

When you say you "think" it's your password. This is the password that you would have typed in moments earlier when you logged into the desktop.

Did you install Ubuntu from the desktop (live) CD? If so it only creates one user and that user has only one password.

Do any of the other admin tools under System --> Administration work? Such as synaptic package manager. Does that ask for a password, and then accept the password you give it?

Have you followed any procedures anywhere that "enable" the root account? This can play havoc with sudo and the gui tools.

When I click on the icon "VMware Player" I get "Browse for virtual
machine configuration file"
I then click on "Browser-Appliance". Then Browser-Appliance-1.0.0 opens
and Firefox works on the internet.
At this point I've not put in any password.

Ah, you never said it was a pre-installed browser appliance :)

If it's the one you got from here:-

http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/ubuntu.html

Then the username and password are on that page. "ubuntu" :)

Thanks for steering me in the right direction. I went back to where I
got the appliance and found the "getting started" PDF.
Sure enough the password was there.
Here's where I got the Browser appliance and found the PDF:
http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/browserapp.html

Obviously I'm new to this virtual thing.
Any tips for me? Am I on the right track?
