Is Ubuntu 14.04 using Flash Player?

Asked by Margaret Mackintosh

I am using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS... When I checked on the Synaptic Package Manage to find out if Flash Player 11.2.202.394 was installed. It shows that it is installed. But, when I try and track what I ate today on Weight Watchers, I cannot.. (Yesterday I was able to). It says I need the above version of Flash Player installed. If we cannot use Flash Player any longer, what can we use that will do the same job as Flash Player?

Hi,

Just got home. Copied and pasted your commands in a terminal. This is the results:

margaret@margaret-Z62FM:~$ lsb_release -a; uname -a; dpkg -l | egrep 'flash|gnash|swf|spark'
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Release: 14.04
Codename: trusty
Linux margaret-Z62FM 3.13.0-30-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 4 21:43:42 UTC 2014 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux
ii flashplugin-installer 11.2.202.394ubuntu0.14.04.1 i386 Adobe Flash Player plugin installer
margaret@margaret-Z62FM:~$

I don't know why it shows 3.13.0-30-generic....

Hope this helps.

What browser are you trying to use?

You may want to try clearing the cache (close browser first):
rm -r ~/.adobe/Flash_Player/*

Hi Daniel,

I have been using for the past several years Mozilla Firefox.

I put the commands into a terminal and this is the result;

margaret@margaret-Z62FM:~$ rm -r ~/.adobe/Flash_Player/*
margaret@margaret-Z62FM:~$

Doesn't look like anything happened.

sudo apt-get --purge remove flashplugin-installer

Enable the partner repo and install the adobeflash-plugin package.

Hi,

I put in the commands below into a terminal. I could not copy and paste for some reason and was to long to just write down but it did removed packages.

Checked and the partner repo is already installed. So then I tried to install the adobeflash-plugin package. When I put this in the search box, nothing came up at all, so could not install anything.

What next?

Hi again,

I just tried again in the Synaptic Package Manager to put in adobeflash which did not come up with any results. So I typed in flash and results came up, got 3 package choices:

.flashplugin-installer 11.2.202.394ubuntu (rest could not see)
       . " " -downloader " " " " " " " " "
       . " " -nonfree-extrasou 0.0.svn2431-3ubuntu (rest could not see)

Which of these should be installed?

I think you're getting off track. You already have the Flash plugin installed. Was it just one site that did not work or was it all Flash sites?

HI,

SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS. I DO NOT HAVE THE CAP LOCK ON. DON'T KNOW WHY I AM GETTING CAPS. IF I HAVE FLASH PLUGIN INSTALLED THEN WHY CAN'T I LOOK AT THINGS ON THE WEATHER CHANNEL, TRACK WHAT I EAT ON WEIGHT WATCHERS AND LOOK AT OTHER THINGS ON OTHER WEB SITES. FROM WHAT I CAN TELL I HAVE A CHOICE OF INSTALLING THE 3 CHOICES ABOVE. FAR AS I CAN TELL WHEN I CHECK ON THE PACKAGE MANAGER THERE IS NO FLASH ANYTHING INSTALLED. COULD BE WRONG.

AM I ABLE TO STILL INSTALL FLASH PLAYER? OR IS LINUX USING SOME OTHER PROGRAM FOR THIS? I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO GET THINGS BACK TO NORMAL. DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?

DO YOU THINK SWITCHING BROWSERS WOULD HELP? IF SO, WHICH BROWSER? NOTICED THAT KONQUERER IS EITHER ALREADY INSTALLED OR IN THE PACKAGE MANAGER. FORGET WHICH.

ANDREW,

I AM UNABLE TO PUT YOUR COMMANDS IN A TERMINAL CAUSE ALL WRITING IS IN CAPS AND I HAVE NOT THE SLIGHTEST IDEA HOW TO GET NORMAL PRINT BACK.

Hi,

My text is back to normal. Andrew I just put in a terminal your commands. Here is the results:

margaret@margaret-Z62FM:~$ sudo apt-get --purge remove flashplugin-installer
[sudo] password for margaret:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package 'flashplugin-installer' is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 11 not upgraded.
margaret@margaret-Z62FM:~$

What should I do next?

Hi,

I just installed both the flashplugin-installer and the flashplugin-downloader. Hope that takes care of the problem. Will check.
