Compiz/beryl (un)install problems

Asked by Servaas VDC

Ubuntu Dapper Drake
1.0-9742 beta nvidia drivers

Recently I tried to install Compiz, I followed a guide on ubuntuforums.org for nvidia cards with the beta drivers. After some apt-gets it was installed but I couldn't get it to run, tried to do it in terminal with "compiz --replace --use-conf gconf" but I got "Compiz: no composite extension". Any other command starting with compiz gave that error. I looked it up and it's got to do something with AIGLX or something but as far as I know it should use the nvidia beta drivers because those have integrated aiglx, right? I tried adding "Composite" "True" to the config but then I just got a screen with a flurry of colours, had to reach for the power button. Tried Beryl but that gave the exact same error.

So then I tried deinstalling it by removing the packages from synapsis (sp) but now my gnome won't boot anymore. It's just stuck at "Loading window manager" even though I selected GNOME/ "Default system session" as session. I tried loading fail-safe gnome session and that works but I can't do much in that one, also the headers of every screen are gone. I mean the thing at the top where you have to click to drag them. I tried using "metacity --replace" and that fixed it, but only temporarly, I could add it to Sessions I guess but I don't like patch solutions, and I'm still stuck in that failsafe session anyway.

Somehow, somewhere a terminal with a gnome log popped up and apparently it's still trying to load compiz even though it's not the compiz session, and compiz packages are deinstalled. Unfortunately I can't get that log to show up anymore. Tried reinstalling gnome but there's so many packages starting with gnome I'm not sure which one to select. I would just like to have a working gnome back for now. So my question is, what would I have to do to reset gnome settings? Possibly some help with the compiz/beryl problem as well if anyone might have had the same problem. Latest version of compiz.

Try resetting the gnome session; to do this you must hold down the CTRL and SHIFT keys together when you log in to GNOME.

And make sure you have removed all beryl related packages. E.g. emerald, beryl-manager etc.

Oh, and for installation of Beryl, I recommend following a guide from the Beryl-Project wiki (http://wiki.beryl-project.org/index.php/Install/Ubuntu).

Thanks for your reply. I tried the suggested combination, but there wasn't any difference; perhaps I'm doing it wrong. I tried it at the login screen, after logging in when it says "Loading window manager" and when it was fully loaded. I have uninstalled all beryl, compiz and emerald packages, but not much difference. It is still stuck on "Loading window manager", someone else suggested to wait 5 minutes and after a while it does indeed load, however without window decoration. As described in this thread: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=301215&highlight=compiz. I tried entering "gnome-settings-daemon &", in a GUI terminal it said "You can only run one xsettings manager at a time; exiting" and in a regular terminal "Cannot connect to display". I guess it's already running then. I also tried reinstalling metacity but no avail.

How did you install compiz? You might have left some file behind, which you manually altered/created. Did you edit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom perhaps? Another way of resetting your gnome session would be to mv ~/.gconf and .gconfd to a backup dir, checking if this would help. But first, check if you left something behind.

"compiz --replace --use-conf gconf" but I got "Compiz: no composite extension"

^ Make sure you have this in your xorg.conf:

Section "Extensions"
     Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

"I looked it up and it's got to do something with AIGLX or something but as far as I know it should use the nvidia beta drivers because those have integrated aiglx, right?"

^ Actually in Edgy, aiglx is a part of X itself. The 9X.XX NVIDIA drivers support the feature with an built-in extension in the driver. They do work with AIGLX as well, but that would only add an extra layer to rendering your graphics.
