Poor video playback performance

Asked by Fred

I have a very good computer. Intel Core 2 Duo, 4gb RAM, GeForce 8600GT, 500gb disk, etc.

I am running Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon.
I am using the Nvidia proprietary graphics card device drivers.

I have tried video playback in several media players, and have noticed that the performance is poor.
If you just watch, it works pretty decently, but if you want to skip in the movie it doesn't work good.

I don't know why it is like this, but I suspect this may be a problem with the device drivers.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report and subsequently we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

I also have this problem in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron (Alpha4 + updates).

I started to use Linux to get freedom. And be immune against spyware and viruses.
But if it gets between me and porno, then I will gladly surrender my freedom!

Please fix the multimedia so it is fast, smooth and responsive without delays and lag.
