Upgraded to 14.04 and Ubuntu Base upgrade is suggested and this crashed the computer.

Asked by Roger Munday

Upgraded from 12.10 to 14.04 6days ago, Software Updater suggested a Ubuntu Base update of around 32 Mb.
Ran this and an error message came up and the computer crashed, lost files and two years of photos that I had not backed up.
Reloaded 14.04 and Updater suggests the same Ubuntu base update, and obviously I do not want to risk the same crash.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

Does this happen in all desktop environments?

Did you upgrade to 13.04 and then to 13.10 in between?

Thanks for your response.
It was a direct upgrade to 14.04.
In conjunction with someone more skilled than me, we have identified the cause. A faulty hard drive. We are installing a second and transferring files from the first, (which is now working, with occasional hiccups).
I had an Ubuntu backup of all files saved on the Windows partition and after some difficulty, he managed to restore these to the Ubuntu partition.
Thanks again, problem solved.

You cannot leapfrog releases like that and is why I asked. You needed to upgrade sequentially through the releases. The only time you can jump releases is if you were using Precise. This would then be an LTS to LTS upgrade and is supported. You will have simply been told to reinstall (which you did) as you did not follow correct upgrade process and would explain why you are getting issues.
