Will Software Updater autostart if it is not on the Launcher?

Asked by DonKaron

In 14.04 must the Software Updater icon be open on the Launcher to permit it to perform its daily check for updates? I unlocked the Software Updater icon from the launcher but have yet to see it pop on its own initiative and announce that updates are available. However, when I manually start the updater there are updates waiting to be installed. Perhaps I haven't waited long enough.

I have been searching but unable to find the answer to this.

Advice?

I should add that I'm using Unity as the desktop.

No, the software repositories updates are run fully in the background. When finished this will trigger the icon to come up on it's own when there are updates. Of cause you still have the option to start the updater manually.
