fan always on 100%

I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 amd64 on a thinkpad SL500. It was previously runnng Ubuntu 13.10.

Now with 14.04 the fan is running at full bore all the time. I don't remember it ever being this loud in 13.10.

What can I do to address this?

I have the same problem on a thinkpad T430u.
With previous versions (13.04 and 13.10) the fan was only ever running noticably when I played Portal 2 or Left 4 Dead 2 or sat it down on my bed.
Now after the 14.04 install the fan constantly runs at highest speed and it actually puts a big dent in my battery life!

OK maybe I spoke to soon. This morning after yet another restart (I did many to test) the fan has come on full bore and I have not gotten it back on again. So I don't know what was going on.
