How do I install a Canon MG5550 printer on Ubuntu?

Asked by John Riley

Hi
I've just had to replace my printer - I now have a Canon MG5550 inkjet printer. I run Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I have downloaded drivers into my Download file but am stuck. What do I do next? Sorry but I am one of the new breed of ignorant Linux users who has come from the IBM world and who struggles a lot - it originally took me two days to find out you use Alt Control T to get to the cursor in the terminal.It also took me several hourse to somehow istall my previous printer and I still don't know how I managed it!! Is there anyone who can spell out the commands for what I do next please?

I have the following files now in my downloads folder but what do I do next please step-by-step?

/home/john/Downloads/scangearmp-mg5500series-2.20-1-deb.tar.gz
/home/john/Downloads/cnijfilter-mg5500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz

I unpacked these by right clicking on them.
Next I double clicked on the right deb file hoping to install it

But then my system Update Manager gave the following error message: "Dependency is not satisfiable...."
and also "This IJ Printer Driver provides printing functions for Canon inkjet printers operating under the CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) environment.
So I'm totally stuck.

Many Thanks
John

Try this site.

http://www.canon-europe.com/Support/Consumer_Products/product_ranges/printers/pixma/index.aspx

You will go thru a few pages to get to your printer. Be sure to highlight Linux. When the driver files are up, use Deb files not RPM.

There seems to be a solution from what I can make of a French Ubuntu help stream, but I cannot make sense of it - it is at:

Hi,

You need to install the driver for the printer (cnijfilter-mg5500series-4.00-1-deb) first.
Make sure that your printer is not yet plugged in. Normally, if the driver has been installed without problems, plugging the printer in the USB port should lead to its recognition by the system.

You can then install the driver file for the scanner afterwards.

NB: The Canon files are marked as compatible with Ubuntu 13.04 but the Ubuntu-French page seems to say that it was successfully installed on a 12.04 LTS system (i.e. dependencies problem solved).

You can find your architecture with:

uname -m

x86_64 = 64bit
i686 = 32bit

Thank you everybody!
I have now (after several hours!) got it working. I gave up trying with v12.04 and upgraded my Ubuntu to v13.10.
The above downloads would not install. However after trial and error I installed the accompanying file: cnijfilter-common_4.00-1_i386.deb (and its counterpart for the scaner)b and with those installed it allowed me to install the MG5500series drivers. Even then I had problems getting the printer to actually work! I must admit that at one stage my patience nearly snapped and I almost went out and bought a Mac - it's only because I believe in and support the open source movement that I didn't.
Thank you again for your replies - they were a great help.
John
