Using 'SoundConverter"

Asked by Rick Miller

Evening:

I've installed "Sound Converter" so that I could convert .wma files to FLAC. For some really weird reason, VLC will not play .wma in Ubuntu(although it will in MSWin). So, opened app and tried to convert. Couldn't get it to work. I either need #1. directions to get a manual (did look for it, didn't find it) or #2. just simply tell me how to work it! While on this subject, could I convert ogg. to FLAC or .wav? What application would I need to convert to mp4?
Now, for something completly different, I would like to have "restart" in the shutdown menu. Is that possible?

Rick
Check this site.

http://soundconverter.org/

Unsurprisingly, Sound Converter is, well, a sound converter for the GNOME environment. It reads anything the GStreamer library can read (Ogg Vorbis, AAC, MP3, FLAC, WAV, AVI, MPEG, MOV, M4A, AC3, DTS, ALAC, MPC, Shorten, APE, SID, etc...), and writes WAV, FLAC, MP3, and Ogg Vorbis files. See its homepage for more.

Also check this site.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/55352/convert-library-of-wma-tracks-to-mp3s

It says that you must install Lame (it is in Ubuntu Software Center).

Andrew & Michael:

Gentlemen: KUDOS my friends. As always, you 2 have come through.

Michael: The askubuntu question 196129 does explain why some .wma files are not "read". However I was more concerened with why .wma files play in Windows media player/VLC, yet the necessary decrytion program is eliminated from Uuntu/VLC or any of it's own Ubuntu/Linux media players. Is Linux now, starting to play MSWindows "marketing ploys" games?

Andrew: Before I run the command you posted, I want to understand a bit more. Does the command allow play of .wma files, or does it just allow conversion of such file...or both?

I have one last question/comment for you both. I'm going to investigate "WINAMP" media player. If either of you have comments/opinions to share about this media player, I'd certainly welcome them.

Now, it's time for me to do some reading/understanding.
THANK YOU:
Rick

Evening Everyone:

I NOW have VLC playing .wma's . THANK YOU to everyone involved. For quite awhile now. I'd ripped music in .wav, and more recently in FLAC. Yet, I still had many a file ripped in .wma/lossless. I don't know if it will 'convert" from .wma's, to any other format, however, that point is now moot. I've also taken care of a few other "problems" I was dealing with. MY GAWD, Ubuntu is FINALLY becomming the O.S. I thought it could be. If/when you experience the sun rising in the west and setting in the east, you'll know for sure, I have "solved" all my problems!!!!
I owe you a few drinks:
