folders disappear when i log out

Asked by Kathy E

I am using 12.04.

For the last week, I have had folders disappear from my folder labeled sewing. I have added the folders back several times. The folders appear to be there until I log out. When I log in again the folders and all data in them have disappeared again!

Day before yesterday, I deleted the folder labeled "Sewing" and then created another folder labeled "Sewing". I added other folders inside "Sewing". Then logged out. I logged in this morning and everything appeared to be there.

So I added data to the folders inside "Sewing". Everything looked good.

My husband came by to use the computer, he logged me out and logged into his user. After he logged out and I logged in again, the folders and all data had disappeared from "Sewing".

I collect a great deal of sewing and craft related information. I create the folders, more folders inside the folders, add the info. When I have collected enough info I move it to a cd or dvd to save and remove it from the folders on the hd. I remove ONLY the info files NOT the folders. I have been doing this since 2008 and have not had a problem. This has now happened several times in one week.

I have searched for the folders using Dash, I have searched using terminal. I have manually gone through the system looking for them. and cannot locate any of it. It is just gone.

I would appreciate any suggestions to resolve this matter. Thank you.

At first you should check the file system for errors.
Hold down the Shift key while starting the computer and you will be presented with a boot menu that aks which operating system to start. There should be at least on option with the phrase "Recovery" in it. Choose on of them and wait for the system to boot. After a while you will see a menu. Choose the option to check the file systems from it.

I did the Recovery, It did not change anything. So I started to experiment some more. I discovered more missing folders in the nested folders. It took a while before I realized the missing folders were empty folders (no files in them). Apparently empty folders are no longer allowed. I created a "place holder file" and put it in each empty folder I created. The folders are still there today. I had not thought about the folders being empty.

Thank you for your assistance. A suggestion made by someone else does present a different point of view and will trigger other ideas to resolve the problem.

Ubuntu does not delete empty folder. There is still something wrong with your installation.
