I'm not sure about VMWare workstation, but personally I use server and love it.

There is an install howto here:
http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu_feisty_fawn_vmware_server_howto

This was written for Feisty (7.04), but is exactly the same in Gutsy (7.10) (or any other version for that matter).

Let me know if any bits of that howto are unclear, and I can help you through the install!

when i do the Build Environment step ( aptitude install xinetd ) , it show
-------------------------------------------------
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
-------------------------------------------------

Hello,

You can use the free vmware player to set up a VM in Ubuntu. First you want to install the VMware player from http://www.vmware.com/download/player/

Then you will will need to create an ISO of your installation media or link the file from http://www.vmwarez.com/2006/02/livecd-player-virtual-machine.html to your ODD. This is easiest done with creating an ISO image from your windows install CD though.

Of course you may also want to increase the size of the hard drive in the vm file, which is what I did.

I also forgot to mention VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/

This for me was a lot easier to set up and ran faster then VMware.

nick_khor,

It may be the type of bridge that you have set up between the host operating system and the hosted operating system. It is probably set up as bridged, you may want to try it with NAT.
