Why is Ubuntu 13.04 so slow to install?

One of the things I have always loved about Ubuntu is that it is, or was, very fast to install. 13.04 is giving me pause on that belief. Is there some reason why 13.04 is so slow to load? It seems as bad as WinBlowz. What's up with that?

Did you select to install updates at install time?
Are you using a CD or USB or DVD to install with?

Are you sure that your Internet connection in fast enough ? Ubuntu by default, uses your Internet connection to download and install packages. My experience with different installations shows that a time between 15-30 minutes is OK, for an ADSL 10-12 Mbps speed.

Other problem might be the HDD/ the speed of HDD. There Ubuntu writes its bits during installation.

At current time I cannot locate a DVD image for 13.04 .

Though a DVD image for 12.04 LTS exists here
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04.2/release/
(DVD image install/Live)

This DVD image has the whole packages "pre-installed" and no Internet connection is needed to install additional packages.

 I have the DVD iimage and my connection is more than fast enough, ~ 50
mbit download. The problem is Ubuntu. I turned around today and install
the 64-bit Linux Mint 15 - xfce and it runs beautifully. I've had
nothing but trouble from Ubuntu in the past year or so and I guess I'm
done with it.

You guys should take a look at what you're doing. There's a lot of bad
and broken stuff going out.

Linux Mint is nothing more than an Ubuntu BASED distribution. The things that Linux Mint have different are the Desktop Environment and maybe some additional packages (I'm not sure for the packages though).

When you say "You guys should take a look at what you're doing" leave my name outside and I assume every user's name here on Launchpad Answers Tracker.
In our majority we are not developers in here. We are people that want to help other people and that's all.
Maybe some of us are power users, yes, but not developers.

 Thank you for your response. I was just supposing that some developer
types might be listening. I'm just disappointed to see my favorite
distro of many years fall apart. Ubuntu has been my goto Linux since
around 2005. Mint seems to outperform Ubuntu at every turn at this
moment in time. And I'm finally running a 64-bit linux to boot!

Well, perhaps it depends on your hardware. If you're using and old computer, or one with Nvidea or Radeon cards, you're more likely to have problems. Ubuntu works perfectly on my not very fast emachines, which has an Nvidea card. Perhaps you've got a slow cd/dvd drive?

The hardware I am using is some of the most capable and up-to-date you can get. There is something wrong or strange about what Ubuntu is doing. Things act strangely and load much too slowly.

That said, I'm running Xubuntu 13.04 and (knock wood), it seems to be running just fine. I had some difficulties with Virtualbox and Medibuntu, but those have been resolved.

Gnome used to be my goto desktop, but given al the Unity garbage I can't use it any more. Xfce is ~ what gnome used to be, but it seems better. Hopefully, no one will try to stick a Unity type face on xfce.
