my nvidia 8600GT works only in vesa

Asked by Dan Schneider

Hello,

I Just recently upgraded my desktop to ubuntu, ubuntustudio 32bit actually.

before i installed ubuntu i bought a nvidia 8600gt 512mb that in the nvidia website say it is supported by their linux driver.

when i first booted from the live cd it recognised both of the monitors pluged and it chose th NV driver in xorg.

after the installation the situation is this:
booting from the hard drive (nv driver which is the default) - both of the screens turns on in the login part but the picture is all messed up and can't be understand.
the computer don't crash though...

if i boot after reconfiguring xorg to vesa in recovery mode it works fine but only on my main monitor (the on pluged to the DV connection) the other one is not turning on.

when i enable the restricted driver from the system menu the setup phase goes all well but after rebooting it goes all messed up again on the login screen,
but - it activates both of the screens and again the computer does not crash. after checking the xorg.conf file it was on a different driver no nv but nvidia.

again i reconfigured xorg to vesa and tried again in two ways - the drivers from nvidia website an with envy, non worked.

what can i do?...

if it important then my system is:
cpu:amd athlon 64 x2 3600
motherboard:asus m2v-mx
ram:1024mb
video card: inno3d nvidia 8600gt 512mb

ubuntustudio 7.10 i386

monitor1 - lcd:LG1900R (DV)
monitor2 - crt (VGA)

Hello there. While nvidia do support the 8600GT card in linux they only started to recently, the 8800gts and 8800gtx are supported by the nvidia-glx-new package, unfortunately this was not updated in time so you will need to manually install the nvidia driver, after removing the nvidia-glx package. The version of nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new in Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 have occasional problems also.

You can either manually install the driver from nvidia's website, or use the tool envy which will do this on your behalf. Envy is not recommended generally but it will be useful for your particular problem. http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html

Hope this helps.

Hello, thanks for the detailed response.
But - i already tried envy and it gave me the same results as with the nvidia website driver and the restricted drivers.
the computer boots and does not crash but the display is all distorted and can not be understood.
maybe i don't install the driver right, i don't know...
but i know for sure that the hardware itself is good because it works on windows (i have dual boot).

is this a known bug\problem tha will be fixed in hardy? i found a lot of posts regarding the 8600gt and gusty in the forums but all the solutions that seemed to fix it didn't work on my computer...

HI Dan. Ok so envy doesn't work and the restricted driver doesn't work, all i can think of is to try install fresh the official Ubuntu the desktop edition, not the studio and see if the problem remains. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu If this works fine then we can troubleshoot what is going wrong with the studio package , if anything.

hope this helps

Also, UbuntuStudio has their own support channels at http://ubuntustudio.org/support
