Improve performance of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

I have Ubuntu Tweak and Bleach Bit ( + for Root) and get all the regular updates. It would be most appreciated if further advice and means of improving the Operating System's performance for quicker running could be kindly given, please. Thanks for the help.

Use Unity2D wll use fewer resources than the 3D one, or switch to XFCE or LXDE for supreme lightness.

Also install preload and switch your browser cache to tempfs can help. Using lighter apps will help too
