Can't burn cds, can't send CUE sheet

Asked by James Michael Page

I have tried Brasero, NeroLinux, K3b, cdrecord, and others. Nothing works.

I replaced my old SATA CD-R/DVD-ROM with a new Pioneer SATA CDR/DVD writer...that didn't fix the problem either

Here is a log output from Brasero

I have tried DAO, TAO, and raw.

I actually got the drive to write something with the -raw96r option and cdrecord from the command line.

I've tried to burn audio and data cds, everytime yields the same error.

The drive mounts and plays cds and dvds, but won't write. The drive is linked to /dev/scd0, and I have read that when they are mounted to /dev/hd* they work better. I'm not sure if that's true. I don't know where to go from here. Both drives worked flawlessly in windows. I have updated the firmware in my Drive, and changed my computers BIOS to "plug and play OS, YES"...but nothing seems to fix it. I've tried different types of media(but, remember the drives both worked fine in windows). I think I've narrowed it down to a software problem. Maybe permissions? I have NO idea how to fix a permission problem.

Did you see

 http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=184698

 could't it be your problem?

The very first error message you received is:

stderr: /usr/bin/wodim: Operation not permitted. Warning: Cannot raise

I've had the same problems and tried every dvd writing package available under Ubuntu (well nearly every commonly used package.

My basic question is - is there anyone out there using 10.04 that successfully uses Brasero, K3b, GnomeBaker or another easy-to-use dvd writer to write data files to a dvd?

The answer seems to be to use Windows!

I'm astounded and disappointed with 10.04 as it's been a real step backwards from Windows in so many respects simply because the standard packages provided and 'out of the box' support for devices has been abysmal. How Canonical could issue this rubbish is surprising - don't they test anything?

This will put any normal person off using Linux for life.

Some basic problems only resolvable after many trials of many different packages and expended many, many hours and some problems still not resolved:

- couldn't read flv files (now use vlc)
- couldn't read in audio CDs (eventually resolved)
- HP printer not supported until package separately downloaded
- then needed separate download to scan documents
- mobile broadband time out requiring dongle removal/replacement (up to 10 times per day - not resolved)
- can't find a dvb-tv package to use tv dongle effectively (mythTV is a joke - unusable to a normal person)
- can't write data files to DVD (well you can infrequently - perhaps it's related to the passage of the sun over the earth or something)

I wonder whether Ubuntu is a waste of time or whether other Linux flavours will be better options.

With these Ubuntu problems, people must be wasting countless hours trying to do very basic operations - what a waste of human effort.

I ran into this problem back when I was running CentOS 5. Going to Ubuntu did not improve the situation, so I replaced the drive to no avail. Something changed, perhaps in the kernel, several months ago that affects the ability to write CDs/DVDs. I'm still frustrated and am looking for a solution. To me using windoze is not the answer!

Can you help with this problem?
