how can I UPGRADE 12.05 using a USB stick

Asked by teledyn

When I try to use the USB image for 12.10 or 13.05 to upgrade from 12.05, where it gets to the install options, "Upgrade" is greyed out -- is there any way to upgrade from a USB?

I can't do an upgrade from the network, my only options appear to be CDROM or USB, and since the newer images do not fit on a CD, I'm left with the USB option. I have a ATI-graphics laptop that has hit the driver-missing wall, and booting into Ctrl-Alt-F1 console won't give me network access (the boot is locked on the dialog to enter low-graphics, but the keyboard and mouse won't function at that dialog) so I can't do the normal thing and install the missing package (I could use sneakernet, but the machine is overdue for an upgrade anyway)

Why would the upgrade option appear in the installation sequence yet be greyed out? This happens on both 12.10 and 13.04. Is there something else I must do or some alt image iso that I need?

Its 12.04 and 13.04 not 12.05 or 13.05

If you boot to live USB desktop and fsck the partition, it may help. You will need to upgrade to 12.10 before 13.04 as it is the next release

Don't you have an option to replace the old Ubuntu with new one ? (eg: Replace 12.10 with Ubuntu 13.04).

Use this option, is the same. Your personal files will remained untouched and all programs .. etc will be upgraded.
