I have the same trouble on my HP dv4-2164us laptop with the same SD card reader. A couple of years ago, I installed the rts_pstor driver according to the above-mentioned guide. That driver made it into the next Ubuntu release (I can't remember which one), and it continues to work in Ubuntu 12.04. Now in Ubuntu 13.04, I find that the rts_pstor driver is no longer available, and the SD card reader tries to use the sdhci-pci driver. This doesn't recognize when an SD card is present, so I wonder whether it's the right driver or whether there's some special sauce needed to make it work. I would suggest raising this to the status of a bug, as it's something that used to work and no longer does.

I am not sure if I exactly face the same problem, as I don't get the error message (01:00.1 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Barossa PCI Express Card Reader ) but here on ubuntu 14.04 my realtek multi-card reader seems to be detected but no card is ever mounted.

I had the same problem on 13.10 (same pc) but solved with

Seems to have no effect on 14.04, my sd-hc card is still not mounted.
