Installed Ubuntu 710 on desktop with Windows dualboot on one hard drive and installed linux on the other and when rebooting after install the PC goes straight to windows boot menu...not seeing linux boot menu

Asked by johnnyb

If I'm understanding correctly...GRUB is supposed to load automatically and set up the boot menu. It did say it was loading....what should I do next?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

No, first disk is Vista and the second is backup. I am trying to install Linux on a separate USB external disk.

did you install ubuntu or vista first? Because if you installed ubuntu first and then vista the ubuntu boot loader has been "overruled" by the vista boot loader and you have to enable the GRUB again.

The first hard drive has a dual boot of Win2000 and XP and the second drive has only the install of Ubuntu 7.10 No boot menu shows except for the windows boot menu at start up. Windows sees that there is a new partition on the second drive so I know it is there.

And what disk are you booting (in BIOS)? First (with Win) or second (with Ubuntu)? Grub is installed in MBR of second disk, so you must boot from this disk if you want to "see" grub menu with Ubuntu.

Thank you very much for your help...now working much better. I was booting from first disk and switched setting in bios to boot from second drive with linux installed on it.
