Set the background of the image to transparent, then just rub out the bit you want to be transparent.

Which app? I didn't see anything to make the background to transparent.

Using gimp, right click the layer and click add alpha channel, then select any white/other color background that is no longer needed and delete it. Then rub out the part you want to remove.
TL:DR, add an alpha channel then rub out bits.

I may be a slow-learner in this field .......
I could right click the layer, click add alpha channel, and select white/other colour that is not needed. But after that, while deleting, the chessboard-like-pattern appears. I couldn't rub out anything in some modes (eraser doesn't work). Need I do anything for the eraser in the toolbox? Need I use Alpha to selection, Add to selection or Subtract from selection?

The chessboard like pattern is just it's way of showing transparency.

I got a partially transparent .xfc image (as I asked). It has a square border. So, it is not in the form of a cut-out.

All images are square... however when aslong as it has the checkerboard pattern, when it's displayed the border etc won't be visible. Any chance you could send me the file at <email address hidden> so I can have a look?
