internet connection via ethernet port
I am running Kubuntu 7.04 on this desktop computer (along with Windows XP and Ubuntu 7.10). It has a ethernet port (Realtek 8139 based LAN card). I have got cable broadband connection connected to this computer via a modem. The modem can be connected to either the ethernet port or the USB port.
However, I am not able to connect to the internet via ethernet port. When the modem is connected to the ethernet port, the "Network Connections" module (System Settings --> Network Settings) does not list any Network Interface.
But when I connect the modem to the USB port, it (Network Settings) shows 'eth0' in the Network Interfaces list, which I can select and insert my IP address (I have a static IP address provided by the service provider).
Please help me connecting to internet via ethernet port. I don't think there is any problem with the ethernet port, because it works when I run WindowsXP or Ubuntu 7.10.

We need some information.
Please attach the output of
$ dmesg
when you have just connected your modem via ethernet port.
And can you tell us which modem you have?
