Can't install ubuntu 7.10

Asked by Nevin

I been trying to install ubuntu 7.10, but it takes too long to load,..i.e to reach the desktop, and also the installation process! I clicked on the 'install' icon and it took around 4 minutes for the window to come. Since this was the 64 bit edition,(I've 64 bit processor) i thought to try it with the normal one, but that too responded in the same way.

I have 256MB of RAM with 3Ghz processor speed, with 64EMT and HT Technology. Is there any compactibility issue with the motherboard, since I've noticed that this motherboard/chipset doesn't support Win98!

I booted ubuntu from the CD, and I get some options from there I reach the desktop, where a yellow screen appears first, and stays there for a few minutes, then I get the screen with the "Examples" and "Install" options. When I click on any of those,..I get the response with in "5 to 6 MINUTES"?? I tried booting several times but all ended up in vain..Please help?

You don't have the minimum RAM required (384 MB) to install from the Desktop CD.

You should try to install from the "Alternate CD" which requires only 256 MB of RAM.

Well, whats the alternate CD, where is it listed in the ubuntu site? Even if the RAM's not sufficient, why cant it run from the CD, I mean Live CD?

The "Alternate CD" is a text mode installation CD. It cannot be used as a live CD so you can't "try it without installing it". It is used in situations where you can't use the usual Desktop CD like: low memory, advanced setup, etc.

The reason why the Desktop CD needs more RAM is because of the Live CD. It takes some of your system's memory to decompress part of the CD and runs from it. The more memory you got, better will be the Live CD experience.

You can get the Alternate CD from the download page (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download) but you need to check the checkbox under the "Start Download" button.

Have you been able to complete the installation yet?

I didn't though of it when I answered before but you might also be interested in trying Xubuntu. It's a derivative of Ubuntu but it uses a lot less resources.

Since you haven't mark this question as "solved", I will presume that you haven't been able to install Ubuntu 7.10 on your computer yet.

Tomorrow is the official launch day of Ubuntu 8.04. If you still have problem installing Ubuntu, you might want to try this new and improved release.

Again, if your system is low on RAM, you can give Xubuntu a try.
