Creating a Bootable Cd Possible?

Asked by Joshua Moore

I have an hp compaq 6715b notebook pc that had windows vista basic as the operating system. I wanted to restore the computer to its factory settings so that it was as if I just got it brand new. i mistakenly used the disk sanitizer and it wiped out EVERYTHING! I have no recovery disks or discs for restoring windows vista. Every time i turn the computer on it shows the hp logo and then goes directly to a blank screen that reads, "Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike key when ready". I was told that ubuntu linux has a great operating system so I figured I could download something to a memorex dvd+r disc from this computer I'm using and then just pop the disc into the cd slot of the hp and it would boot up and I would have a useable computer again. Is this even possible? I'm not very computer savy and would require very detailed instructions to making this happen. Please help I'm driving myself crazy...

Hi Joshua,

QUOTE "so I figured I could download something to a memorex dvd+r disc from this computer I'm using and then just pop the disc into the cd slot of the hp and it would boot up and I would have a useable computer again"

That should be about it !!

As long as your HP boots from the CD-ROM before the HDD installing Ubuntu is very easy!!

Download the Live-CD ISO for the version of ubuntu you want to install (ISO is a CD Image to burn on a CD).
Burn the ISO onto a CD-ROM.
Load the CD into your HP and turn it on.
If it boots from the CD you will see the installation menu,,, follow the directions on screen and your done..

IF the CD does not boot you will have to go into the HP's BIOS and change the boot order so the CD is before the HDD.

For me it was as easy as that, and i will say i use Xubuntu which i like better than Ubuntu (download and try both) and its FAR better than (spits @) Vista.

i will add two links for you to read...

Hope this helps
