Dual boot install with existing XP installation

Asked by Eddietel

I currently have XP home installed with many unique applications and files. I would like to install ubuntu in a dual boot environment without jeopardizing existing files. I have a separate installed hard drive that can accommodate unbuntu. Will the install automatically find this drive or is there intervention required?

Yes, the install should find the second hard drive with no problem. Make sure you select the proper drive at the partitioner step. As always, it is a good idea to make a backup before performing any major system administration.

Thanks - I will be installing tomorrow once back-ups are done.

My situation is like David's.
I went as far as to see the installation menu with one item that said "Install in drive 1." Between Partition Magic and Microsoft there appears to be a naming anomaly. One calls my empty second hard drive drive 1, the other calls it drive 2.
I want my Ubuntu 6.06 to be on the second (40GB) not the MS primary (160GB) physical drive.

Will clicking to select the "Drive 1" attempt to install on the second or the first physical drive?

Also, is there a way to boot normally with the Microsoft segment and boot the Ubuntu partition with the help of a floppy disk?
