keep losing network

Asked by Trevor Stuart

I keep losing my network connection every few mins. When this happens I cannot goto any websites, download any e-mails, or browse/access any samba shares. However if I have a download already in progress it still continues, but nothing else works. So the connection is still there but for some reason it's just not working fully. If I wait about 2 mins or so it comes back and all is fine until it happens again, generally about every 10 mins. The only quicker way to bring it back is to go into my network settings and disable and reenable the network adapter...
I've tried the laptop at a differnet location, and it did the same thing. I also trie another laptop, windows, in my office and it worked fine too. That's why I think this is a kubuntu issue... I can't think of any applications I would have installed that could interfer with it, but you never know... Any help is appreciated.

This is Kubuntu Drapper...

I have some additional info...
If I start a ping session when the network is working the pings will continue to respond even when the network stops functioning. For example I was able to continually ping www.google.com, but was unable to goto www.google.com... If I start the ping session when the network is NOT responding it will not respond, even if I leave the ping session working when the network comes back it still will not ping www.google until I stop and restart the ping session...

Hi Trevor: frustrating symptoms indeed! Can you tell us about the type of your network connection? Is it wireless? If so, do you know what wireless card/adapter you have in your laptop? Also, it may help us to know what kind of wireless access point or router you have.

My laptop has both wireless and wired. I've been using the wired connection and having the problems. I thought maybe the wireless was interfering so I shut it off and disabled it in the network settings, but I'm still having the same problems...
I have not tested to see if I have the issues using the wireless, I will try that tonight to rule out the network adapter, but I don't think it's going to make a difference because I think they are actually one network adapter, just with two options....

There are a number of possibilities here: one is that the network cable you're using is faulty or there is some other error with your network card(s). Can you show us the output from 'ifconfig', typed in a terminal?

I've tried different network cables, I've even tried a different building....

Hmmm, I was expecting (perhaps) to see something other than "errors: 0". I don't have any other suggestions at the moment: perhaps someone else will have something to offer ...

Well today there is no issue at all! So either it was a Kubuntu issue and it resolved itself, which I highly doubt. Or it's a hardware problem, which I'm leaning towards... Thanks for all your help anyway!

Trevor
