I need to increase my root disk space

Asked by Alshaimaa

Hi every one..

i need to add more space to my root disk...,
i'm using Ubuntu 7.10, and my root space is nearly 16 GB, swap nearly 20, and home nearly 40GB...
My ubuntu is slowing down and i found that i used nearly all the root disk...
i cut out nearly 16 GB from my windows to add to linux and formatted them to free space.. but i didn't know how to add them to my root..

Sorry i'm somehow new to linux and ubuntu...

Happy new year everyone,, and thanks in advance...

Peace...

To resize partition you can use gparted System-> Administration -> Partition editor
The partitition must be unmounted
so please use gparted booting from live Ubuntu 7.10 cd...

Be warned... save your relevant data...

Hope this helps

Hi:

If the partitions are next to each other you can add the space with the gnome partition (GParted). or You can try to copy all the root and then create more space and copy everything back again.
Good Luck
PS: before repartitioning do a backup

Many thanks dears for the answers...

Now i used the Gparted as you mentioned...i could formated the free space to be ext3..
but i couldn't find any options for merging partitions...
now the root partition are beside the new one... how can merge them?

Another Q. please... for making a backup.. have i do it for the root files only.. or for the swap and home too?

Many thanks in advance.. and sorry for asking so much...
Peace...

If you have free space you must not format it... simply resize (increase) the root partition size...
For example:
| root ext3 partition | Free unallocated space |
Resize as below
| ...... resize the root ext3 partition as this .... |

Hope this helps

Many thanks for the reply dear...

i delete the free space to be unallocated as you mentioned...
but now all options are inactive...
i mean the resizing/ moving function is inactive now..
even when i tried these functions with the root partition, it still inactive and asked me to format the partition...
should i format it first?.. and if i format it, will the linux still working probably, or i'll have to do it from windows?

Many thanks for your reply...
Peace...

Are you using the Ubuntu live cd to make this... you must use the Ubuntu live install cd to do this...
The root partition must be unmounted... to be able to resize it...
Please don't format your root partitition... or your Ubuntu don't work anymore...

Hope this helps

I believe Gparted needs features that include merging partitions and increasing the size of an existing partition. As I understand it, so far it doesn't have those features
