Partitioning Hard-Drive

Asked by the trench

I am looking to put Ubuntu on my computer. I currently run windows, and I would like to be able to continue running it. I know that I can partition my hard drive, and have linux on one half and windows on the other. However, I have NO idea of how to do this ! Can anyone help?

The installer on the Ubuntu liveCD has a partition step. Make sure that you do not select the format the entire drive option. If you need more control over the partitioning step, select "manually edit partions". Otherwise, follow the on screen instructions.

I also sugest that you make a backup of any important files on you Windows install. This is for extremely unlikely event that something goes wrong (like a power surge) during the partioning step.

Glad that you have decided to join the Ubuntu community.

Andrew's instructions should do you just fine. Ubuntu's installer takes into account that many people will want to run it as a dual boot system. As long as you choose NOT to format the drive, it will walk you through the process.

You can use the partitioner that comes with Ubuntu Desktop 6.06 LTS (in the default, liveCD).

If you want, you can use too the GParted LiveCD: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php.

Take a look at a review about GParted liveCD: http://techgage.com/article/gparted_livecd_31-1

Can you help with this problem?
