Help with bug #66267

Asked by Ulrik Mikaelsson

I've filed bug #66267, since I suspect it might be a general bug in Edgy.

However, I would like some tips and assistance to troubleshoot the issue for MY computer. Any clues welcome.

Do you have DMA enabled? What's the output of hdparm /dev/sda ?

ulrik@rawler:~$ sudo hdparm /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
 readonly = 0 (off)
 readahead = 256 (on)
 geometry = 36483/255/63, sectors = 586114704, start = 0

I find it a bit peculiar how I don't get to set DMA, but I guess using a SATA-addin board, anything but DMA wouldn't make much sense, and might be forced to yes?

After filing this support request, I've tried building a new 2.6.18 kernel, due to it's alleged improvements in SATA drivers, and now I get the more promising 30-40 MB/sec per second from hdparm -t, but I still have some very strange behaviours. For instance, I have mounted up my old /dev/hda1 onto /mnt/storage, and keep some music files on it. If I in any way touch hda1, anything else on the computer is seriously disrupted, and the computer is more or less brought to a crawl while hda1 is accessed. (And yes, hda has DMA activated)

Another "evidence" of something just not being right about my setup, is that it takes about 8 seconds for firefox to start, if not in disk-cache. (This on a Athlon 2500 with 512MB ram and a supposedly quick SATA disk) On my 1 ghz p3 laptop with half the ram, and a slow laptop disk, starting firefox is about 2-4 seconds.

Good morning,

I was looking at support requests and noticed this request is from November 2006. I am wondering if you are still having problems with your Ubuntu install and getting your hard drives to work correctly.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Well, to some extent, but after giving up and replacing most hardware, it seems to be mostly tied to my old disc.

Is this something that still needs to be open or can it be marked as answered?

Hmm, well, let's call it answered Seems to perform at bit better with the current Feisty kernel as well, anyways. Too bad it was never fully resolved, though.
