gutsy Live-CD does not boot, stop at this line: [39.904000] EIP: [<e09c339f>] unionfs_rename+0x4df/0x9f0 [unionfs] SS:ESP 0068:dc009e24

Asked by Martin Backhaus

I tried to boot the ubuntu gutsy 7.10 Live-CD (I tested the normal and the graphics compatibility mode), but after the ubuntu logo (with the progress bar under it) only a blank screen with a cursor blinking in the upper left corner is displayed. Nothing more happens. Ctrl+Alt+F1 (shell) shows "loading, please wait".

After managing to turn off the splash screen, I found out that ubuntu stops at this line:
[39.904000] EIP: [<e09c339f>] unionfs_rename+0x4df/0x9f0 [unionfs] SS:ESP 0068:dc009e24

I also tried a SimplyMEPIS Live-CD (6.5.02) and KDE started without problems.

The whole problem is similar to this one (a DELL Laptitude C600 Laptop): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3992693
The last two lines are nearly identical. Here is a description of the laptop: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latc600/en/ug/specs.htm

Now, some system informations:

Intel Pentiun III 700 Mhz, 512 MB RAM
Motherboard: ASUS CUBX-E Rev. 1.01
ubuntu gutsy 7.10 desktop Live-CD

SimplyMEPIS-Kernel-Version: 2.6.15-27-desktop (where KDE starts without problems)

Ok, now I managed to deactivate the splash screen...

This is the last line, then nothing more happens:
[39.904000] EIP: [<e09c339f>] unionfs_rename+0x4df/0x9f0 [unionfs] SS:ESP 0068:dc009e24

More information:

CPU: Intel Pentiom III 700 Mhz
RAM: 512 MB

Kernel-Version: 2.6.15-27-desktop (using SimplyMEPIS !, where the boot works)

Here are the tech specs of the laptop (Dell Latitude C600) from the above thread with the same problem:

Maybe the problem is related to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/141508 ??

I found some SQUASHFS errors before the unionfs line:

SQUASHFS error: sb_bread.....
SQUASHFS error: unable to read page.....
...

After some googling I found some references to CD integrity issues.
Coincidentally, i have a unused CD drive here and after building it in, the Live-CD boots fine.
But why was it possible to boot MEPIS?

This is most probably the following issue: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SquashfsErrors
