XP pro no longer regocnizes sound device after Ubuntu 7.10 dual boot. How do I fix it so I have sound in XP as well as Ubuntu?

Asked by Joe

Hi, I have a DELL dimmension 3000 that came with XP home SP2. I went to Ubuntu after years of XP. I backed up my music and movies on a Seagate external Hard drive and it does not recognize it. So I went back and installed a copy of XP pro my friend let me use because I don't have the reintallation disk for my computer. I reloaded XP pro and I no longer have sound. I am using the integrated sound device that my computer came with. I went to the device manager and it says I do not have a mixer device in my system. I can't even access my system volume becuase it says I don't have a sound mixer in my computer. When I try and play music it says my sound device might be being used my another program. Then, I switched back to Ubuntu and dual booted with XP pro and the sound works fine ON UBUNTU not XP How do I get my intergrated sound card to work with XP pro?

I already went into bios and messed with the sound and nothing works. I need help!!

I beleive this is a windows driver issue. dual booting Ubuntu plus Windows shouldnt do anything with your sound device. When booting in Windows, Ubuntu has no influince at all over your sound device. Unless Ubuntu does something with firmware or hardware settings, but thats really far-fetched.

You say you reinstalled Windows after installing Ubuntu? I think you should work out a way to find the correct audio driver for Windows with Dell.
