black screen appears when trying to install

i am a new user to linux, i had ubuntu 7.10 delivered and when i booted it up the install screen appears. i choose install and it starts checking drivers e.t.c then the screen just goes black and it sounds like the disc stops spinning. once the screen turns black i cannot do anything, i cant even switch it off :( my laptop specs are 2gb ram 1.6ghz amd turion 64x2 geforce go 6150 i tried installing in safe mode but the same thing happened how can i solve this problem?????

Hi !

if it is a graphics related issue, you can try to install ubuntu using the alternate cd, which performs a text based installation.

Hi.

I had the same problem but in my case i realized that it wasn't related to graphics.

The problem was that i had a bad install cd. You can check its integrity before installing since there is and option to do so. I think is "Check CD for defects". If it shows errors you will know that you have to use another install cd.
Anyway try using another install cd please and let me know if it worked.

i checked the disc defects and it was ok, how do i get an alternate CD?

well you will have to download an alternate cd image, or the regular iso file and burn it to the cd. I will recommend you to try to install from a different Install CD, and if it doesn't work try downloading the alternate cd image.
