Can one connect to two networks simultaneously?

Is it possible to have my laptop connected to another laptop via crossover cable, and still maintain its wireless internet connection? I am running Ubuntu Feisty, if that matters.

When I connect the two computers together, the wired connection is preferred, and the wireless connection is dropped.

Thanks for the question.

You can have as many network connections simultaneously as you have network devices. Therefore, you can continue to have your wireless connection running while you connect with the crossover-cable to the other computer.

However, since you will have no DHCP or similar server configuring the two network devices that are connected via cross-over cable, you need to do this manually. On ubuntu you can use the network manager to manually configure the ip address, and netmask in order to allow the correct addressing and therefore that the network packets are sent via the correct device.

If you need concrete values, please give information about your current settings in order to make sure that it will not conflict with those.
