Cannot change appearance preferences

Whenever I go to Appearance Preferences and try to check Extra, the screen will freeze with a message stating "composite ext not available" , only way to rid myself of the screen is to reboot.

It is an ATI Radeon 1300 Pro

problem solved, did not have xgl installed, thanks for your help!!
