Videos won't play - only stripes in player window

Yesterday my movie player could play anything - today the screen is full of vertical stripes but the sound is ok. There are no error messages.
The only thing I have done since yesterday is to add a few desktop effects in compis-fusion. Does it have anything to do with that or do you have any better ideas?

Hi Sbn,

If you didnt do anything else with your system (e.g. install other codecs, upgraded existing ones, upgraded entire system, upgraded video driver, etc.), that would be the obvious... Have you tried disabling those desktop effects? There might be 1 or 2 effects that dont go too well with video playback. Try toggling some on and off...
If you find out which one, log a bug with the compiz fellows.

In the meantime, you could try and use another engine (e.g xine > gstreamer), or something like that...
