It should not be a problem to get them working and communicating. What do you exactly want to do? Set up a small network? Sharing files? Using Ubuntu as server for mail, www or something else?

Actually I want to set up a small network of 4 computers 2 running
MacOS, one Ubuntu and one XP, with a couple of printers included.

I work on 3 floors and want the convenience.

Thanks for responding.

I would guess a Samba is what you want. What you're looking for is sharing printer, moving files and probably having a network drive installed on all those computers, right?

Try this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpSamba

Thanks for your suggestion but having read the link you provided, it
looks pretty tech and I am a novice though moderately adventurous.
Samba maybe a bit much. Is there something I can attempt in a more
simple way?

Thank you.

Ashok

Nothing that I am aware of can right out replace Samba, but most of that guide is about creating a Samba server. What you will probably need from are following sections:

Installing Samba
Configuring your computer
Fill in your settings
Browsing Samba shares
Mounting a Samba share

These should be pretty easy to follow. After that, the computer should have the same basic network functionality that 2 Windows computer connected to the same workgroup have. The rest of the guide would be to have the equivalent of corporate domains, which are much more complicated (and featured), but probably overkill for your setup.

For your printer, I would suggest sharing it from Windows if you can, then connecting to it from Ubuntu. See this guide here: http://www.watchingthenet.com/connecting-to-shared-printers-on-windows-computers.html

I do not know if Mac OS X can do easy access of samba shares but Ubuntu can. So you can share the printers and folders from a Windows computer (by right-clicking onto the folder or printer, then propertys and then share or something like this [I'm not sure!]) and easyly use them with Ubuntu by navigating to "Places" => "Network" => "Windows-Network". The printers can be easyly involved using "System" => "Administration" => "Printers". Then add a printer with connection type "Windows Printer via SAMBA", choose the right model and here you go. ;)

Can you help with this problem?
