How do I install programs

Asked by Ingalls

I am using Ubuntu
I went to the add remove programs
And I pressed the check mark to download it it says something about refreshing
I pressed the refresh button
It "Downloads??"
It then says on the description underneath it that you need special hardware of the program does not support you computer type?!
It does this for all the programs.

Did you checked the program that you want to install and clicked on Apply Changes? Does synaptic do the same thing?

Apply changes is grayed-out even after it "refreshes"
unfortunately I don't have synaptic because I haven't been able to download anything and it didn't come with Ubuntu

Can you post a screenshot of that "Refresh" ?

You can still use the command line, Applications > Accessories > Terminal, and type "sudo aptitude install synaptic".

And synaptic works? You can just uploaded to imageshack.us and post the link.

And after the Refresh? Go to the Terminal again and type "sudo aptitude update" and then reopen the Add/Remove

you need to goto the system menu, then administration and then software sources.
make sure the downloadable sources checkboxes are set. then do a refresh in the add/remove programs application
