can't get my tweaked trackpoint settings to stick after reboot

Asked by John Toliver

My specs:
Thinkpad T23
Pentium 1.13Ghz
1GB ram
30GB HDD
Gutsy
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I go to systems>preferences>mouse and move the motion option all the way to the left to make it as fast as possible. Then I test out the change but it's still sluggish so I google and find a tool called the trackpoint configuration tool. I install it then enter:
"sudo configure-trackpoint" and enter password. The configuration app appears and I move the slider for sensitivity and speed all the way to the left and click apply. It works and the pointer traverses the screen with almost nothing more than a thought. I love it. Next I click save and it tells me it's making backups in etc/trackpoint/trackpoint.conf and I save the file.

When I reboot though, the settings are the same as they were when I started. Further googleing says I'm supposed to add some strings to the rc.local file and this should work for keeping my settings.
1. First, why won't the settings the app made be saved to disk?

2. How can I make them stay?

I have edited trackpoint.conf, trackpoint.h and a few other locations and no matter what, when reboot I'm back where I started.

Any ideas are appreciated.

I was able to fix my own problem. the problem was I was putting them in the wrong rc.local file.

I was saving them in "etc/rc.local" when I should have been saving them in "etc/init.d/rc.local".

saving the exact same settings fixed the problem.

The question I have is why are there two rc.local files. Actually a search for the file name reveals I have about 5 rc.local files and I only have two users. Any ideas?
